The Blue Crane is South Africa’s national bird and is restricted as a breeding species to this country, except for a few pairs in Swaziland, Namibia and Botswana. These once-plentiful birds have declined rapidly throughout South Africa, distressingly by as much as 90% in some areas, due mostly to poisoning.

For more information about cranes and the working of the South African Crane Working Group of the endangered wildlife trust call Bronwyn Botha at 082 32 00911.

The newest and yet most exciting wine producing area in the world.
Until the mid 1990s the farming around here was mostly of sheep and grain. No one thought grapes would survive here (or in fact thrive). But a group of pioneers took a chance and slowly their gut feeling is paying off. Wine grapes “blossom” on hardship and this area has that aplenty.
The terroir is the main factor for the excitement in the wine community. A number of climatic factors have allowed the grapes to develop unique flavours, especially for Sauvignon Blanc.
The cool south westerly and south easterly winds that blow daily in summer allow the grapes to ripen gradually while the strong winds also restrict the crops’ skyward growth, encouraging the vine to produce more concentrated fruit. In winter the winds provide a high chill factor that dries out excess moisture.
The member of Elim Winegrowers have incorporated their farms into the Nuwejaars Wetland Special Management Area Initiative. They are commited to developing a sustainable ecology in harmony with farming, while preserving the unique fauna and flora of the Agulhas coastal plains.
The farms here have a slogan “Real wine, Real people” and this in a nutshell shows the commitment and idealism of this young but interesting wine growing area.
